The Indian Embassy at Lisbon hosted around 200 members of the Indian community in celebrating the 71st Independence Day of India with Amararam Gurjar, Chargé d'affaires, unfurling the national flag. Gurjar read out to the gathering the address of President of India to the nation.
Reviewing bilateral ties, the senior diplomat Gurjar said that, "This year's independence-day is very special. Not only it is the 70th anniversary of India's independence but also it has come barely a month after the VVIP Visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Portugal in June 2017. PM Modi's visit was the first ever bilateral visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Portugal and happened within a span of less than six months of visit of Prime Minister Antonio Costa to India in January this year."
During these recent VVIP visits, the two countries signed 19 new MoUs for cooperation in areas such as outer space, nanotechnology, biotechnology, higher education and scientific research, start-ups, information technology and electronics, youth and sports, culture, defence, ocean sciences, renewable energy and agriculture and allied sectors. With renewed focus and momentum, two PMs have affirmed their strong commitment to further strengthen ties.
Speaking about the economic sector, Gurjar said, "India has become the world's fastest growing major economy today, registering more than 7 per cent growth last year and is expected to grow at 7.2 per cent in current financial year and at 7.7 per cent in 2018-19. The Indian economy has the potential to become world's third largest economy by the next decade and one of the two largest economies by mid-century."
