It’s official! 8 disasters notified as ‘State disasters’

The State Revenue Department has notified a set of eight ‘disasters’ as state-specific ‘local disasters’ for the State of Goa in order to enable persons to claim compensation from the government for the loss they have suffered.   

Among the notified State Specific Disasters for the State of Goa includes, heavy rains, gusty winds, thunder and lightning, flood-like water logging in low lying and interior areas, boat capsized due to heavy rains and gusty winds, death due to drowning in flooded waters, railway accidents, aircraft accidents and landslides in mining areas.   

The list of items and norms of assistance for providing relief to the victims of the aforesaid state specific disaster from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) shall be the same as applicable for the Government of India notified list of disasters.   

As per recommendation, of the 14th Finance Commission, expenditure for providing immediate relief to the victims of State Specific Disasters within the local context in the State which are not included in the GOI notified list of disasters eligible for assistance from SDRF/NDRF can be met from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) within the limit of 10% of the funds available under State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF), provided that the State has formally listed the State Specific disasters for inclusion and notified transparent norms and guidelines with a clear procedure for identification of the beneficiaries for disaster relief for such ‘local disasters’   

In order to achieve this the state needed to notify a specific list of State Disasters for providing relief assistance from State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) to the victims of State Specific Disasters within the local context in the State.
