CANACONA
After their three-day chain hunger strike, the ‘Jagruk Canaconkars’ began an indefinite hunger strike on Thursday but withdrew it in its very first hour, when Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation MD Sanjit Rodrigues met the protestors and assured timely action to resolve the garbage problem in Canacona municipality.
A delegation of Jagruk Canaconkars was invited for an interaction with Rodrigues in the presence of councillors and municipal staff of Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) in the chief officer’s cabin.
Rodrigues briefly addressed the garbage issue and then gave instructions to the chief officer Raju Desai for immediate action. The minutes of the meeting were recorded and were asked to be produced before Rodrigues by Friday itself.
“All tasks have to be accomplished in a time-bound manner and weekly compliance reports will be prepared,” said Rodridues.
At the meeting, it was decided that a period of one month has been given to complete initial works and put a system in place.
After the meeting with Sanjit Rodrigues, CMC Dy Chairperson Shamsunder Desai in the presence of Rodrigues and all other councillors requested Jagruk Canaconkars to end their hunger strike.
“After being suitably convinced that things will now move in the right direction, the Jagruk Canaconkars ended their hunger strike,” informed Jagruk Canaconkars member Natividade DeSa, who later accepted juice that was offered by Shamsunder Desai to symbolically end the hunger strike.
