Water supply to Mormugao taluka and Verna Industrial Estate was disrupted on Monday, following a major rupture in the 100 MLD Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) water pipeline at Xelpem-Sanguem.
Executive Engineer S B Gaonkar informed reporters that the pipeline burst early Monday morning and officials rushed to the site, after stopping water supply to the pipeline from the Selaulim Water Treatment Plant.
“The pipeline burst on account of frequent power fluctuations since the last few days, which caused back-pressure in the pipeline and leading to a rupture in the pipeline at the main hole which had welding on the top,” said Gaonkar.
Claiming that the repair work would be completed by late Monday evening, Gaonkar said water to the affected areas would be restored by midnight.
Gaonkar said the ruptured pipeline would have no effect on water supply to Margao and Salcete areas, but would affect water supply to Verna Industrial Estate, from where water is supplied to Mormugao taluka.
The burst occurred near the water tank from where water is supplied onwards to Verna Industrial Estate, informed sources.
Incidentally, this is the third time the JICA water pipeline has burst in the last six months, following two previous incidents at Nagvem-Molcornem.
