Amid an ongoing dispute between the government-controlled Agriculture Produce Market Committee (APMC) wholesale vegetable market, a key supplier of vegetables to Goa, and the now-defunct Jai Kisan Private Wholesale Vegetable Market, Karnataka has proposed an additional wholesale vegetable market in Belagavi under the APMC framework.
During his visit to Belagavi, APMC Minister Shivanand Patil said the proposed supplementary market yard is aimed at addressing the growing demand for space and better facilities for farmers, wholesalers and retailers.
He stated that an additional market yard could help streamline the supply chain, improve marketing infrastructure and encourage healthy competition, ultimately benefiting both farmers and consumers.
Patil said efforts are underway to resolve the current controversy amicably while safeguarding farmers’ interests.
“There is no provision in the existing law to permit the functioning of a private wholesale market. However, if required, an additional market yard can be established under the APMC, so that the traders from the Jai Kisan Wholesale Market can also function,” he said.
