Body retrieved from Chapora river near Revora

The body of Thomas Fernandes (35) of Tormas in Alorna-Pernem, who drowned while trying to untangle a fishing net in the Chapora river near Revora, was retrieved on Friday.

A group of five persons had gone fishing on the banks of the Chapora river at about 3 pm.

While they were fishing, the nets which were cast into the river got stuck at one place. Fernandes went into the river to remove the net, but disappeared in the river.

His friends raised an alarm and alerted locals. The police and the fire services were also pressed into service.

A Mapusa Fire and Emergency Services team conducted a search operation in the river. Colvale Police Inspector Sanjit Kandolkar and a police team as well as locals also assisted in the search operations but were unable to locate Fernandes till late evening, before search operations were called off.

On Friday morning, the body of the deceased was found floating in the river at the spot. After the body was taken out, the Colvale police conducted a panchnama.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after the autopsy at the GMC hospital at Bambolim.
