CURCHOREM: Kishor Rama Gauns Dessai was on Monday elected unopposed as deputy sarpanch of Kalay Panchayat.

The post had fallen vacant after former deputy sarpanch Vilas Bicholkar was ousted in a no-confidence motion.

At a meeting convened to elect the deputy sarpanch, the BDO's observer Asif Sheikh declared Gauns Dessai as elected unopposed as he was the only candidate to file a nomination to the post.

Gauns Dessai was supported by Sarpanch Vaishali Naik, Santosh Gaonkar, Nayan Shelke and Vishant Khutkar, who were present for the meeting, while Vilas Bicholkar and Balu Rekdo remained absent.

Speaking to media persons, Gauns Dessai thanked his supporters for electing him unopposed as deputy sarpanch.

Commenting on change of deputy sarpanch within a short span of 3-4 months, he said, “It was the result of an incident during the recent inaugural function of the panchayat ghar, where locals had confronted MLA Ganesh Gaonkar over a certain issue.”

“Development of Kalay village will continue, as the Kalay Panchayat has full support of the BJP and with the help of MLA Gaonkar, we will undertake overall development of Kalay Panchayat area,” assured the deputy sarpanch.

On the other hand, Panch Santosh Gaonkar claimed that developmental works were carried out in selected wards. “I was not taken into confidence and people from my ward were upset,” he added.

Sarpanch Vaishali Gaonkar said development in Kalay is taking place during MLA Gaonkar's tenure.

“There were a few people who tried to misguide the MLA and I am hopeful that it will not happen now. Our focus will be to continue public works in our village with the help of the MLA,” she added.
