Using ‘awake brain surgery’ for the first time, neurosurgeons from KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital, Belagavi, successfully removed a tumour from the brain of a 33-year-old woman.
Interestingly, the tumour was removed while she was totally awake. Post surgery, she started eating food and walking within 2 hours and went home after 3 days.
Awake craniotomy is a type of brain surgery done in patients having tumours located on eloquent (functional) parts of the brain. In this case, the tumour was located exactly on the hand motor cortex - the part of the brain which controls the movements of the opposite fingers, wrist and elbow. Hence, surgeons opted to keep the patient awake during surgery for continuous monitoring of the movements of the hand.
Neurosurgeons Dr Abhishek Patil and Dr Vikram T P led this successful surgery along with Dr Narendra Patil, Dr Purvashree Deshmukh and Dr Ravi Kerur.
“’Awake Brain Surgery’ is an emerging concept for various brain disorders and is done regularly in the Western world. This lady with a low-grade tumour on the hand motor cortex was a perfect fit for this surgery and we could remove the entire tumour without worsening her deficits” said Dr Abhishek Patil who led the surgery.
