KTC electric buses to replace 38 old private buses in Panaji

PANAJI
The Kadamba Transport Corporation Limited (KTCL) has decided to soon replace 38 privately-owned 15-year-old buses “ currently operating across Panaji “ with electric buses.

KTCL General Manager Sanjay Ghate said that they have identified 38 private buses that are older than 15 years and thus eligible for scrapping. The KTCL electric buses, once operational on Panaji routes, will initially have conductors with plans to shift to ticket purchases through QR codes and online methods.

Ghate further said that the private bus owners opting for replacement with new or old buses will be offered alternate routes instead of the existing Panaji routes. “The buses should not exceed 15 years,” he added.

The Corporation Chairman, MLA Ulhas Tuenkar had months ago announced KTCL’s plan to introduce electric buses on internal routes to decongest the city. “Government aims to enhance the quality of travel services for passengers.

We will ensure KTCL meets the requirement along with decongesting the city,” Ghate said.
Over a month ago, the KTCL commissioned two electric buses on the Panaji Bus Stand to Goa University via Bambolim-GMC at KTC Bus Stand, Panaji route.
These are a part of the Smart City project wherein 48 such buses will be introduced on different routes within Panaji. However, the prolonged Smart City works have been delaying the transportation project.
