A labourer lost his life while two others were injured following a landslide at a retaining wall construction site at Harbour Road in Sada-Vasco on Monday afternoon.
The deceased labourer was identified as Manoranjan Bind (40) of Jharkhand.
Sources said the incident occurred while construction work of a retaining wall was underway along the roadside stretch, where a group of labourers had been engaged since morning. Following heavy rainfall through the night, a portion of mud and loose earth reportedly gave way and came crashing down on the workers at the site.
According to available information, there were around four labourers present when the landslide occurred. Three workers ran as the soil began to collapse, while Bind got trapped under the mud and debris.
The sudden collapse created chaos at the site, with local residents and workers raising an alarm and rushing to assist the trapped labourer.
Personnel from the fire and emergency services reached the spot soon after the incident and launched a rescue operation. After strenuous efforts, the trapped labourer was pulled out from beneath the debris. However, he was found dead by the time rescuers retrieved him.
Two other labourers who sustained injuries during the incident were shifted to the hospital for treatment. Their condition was not immediately known.
Police personnel also rushed to the site and carried out a preliminary inspection. The area was later cordoned off as officials examined the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
Sources said that the continuous rainfall on late Sunday evening is suspected to have weakened the soil and contributed to the landslide.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the safety of labourers working at construction sites during the monsoon season, particularly in vulnerable roadside and hill-cutting zones.
Further investigation into the incident is in progress and Mormugao police station is likely to register a FIR in the incident that had killed a labourer working at the site.
