The land to set up permanent campus for Indian Institute for Technology, Goa is expected to be finalised with the next two months. Currently, the land admeasuring nine lakh square metres at Cacora is under consideration for setting up the prestigious Institute.
A meeting with Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral, officials of Directorate of Technical Education and South Goa Collector has been fixed on Monday morning to identify and resolve issues related to the land.
Speaking to media on the sidelines of a function, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said, "Two-three areas are in focus. Let them (Ministry of Human Resource Development) take a call on one particular land. Only after that the next land can be considered. If I go on hunting many lands simultaneously, nothing will materialise. We have shown them land in Curchorem-Sanguem. There are minor issues with the land, but we will resolve it."
"If they are okay with it and everyone is on board, then it can be finalised. OtherwiseI will hunt for some other area. The land in Dharbandora was actually better but the problem was that it is in Forest Working Plan. And the procedure for utilising it is very lengthy", he stated.
"Right now the Curchorem-Sanguem area is under consideration. There is an IIT team which looks into the matter. I can only offer them the land. Now there is also an offer coming from Sristhal Canacona. But I cannot consider it unless this is decided upon. But by November-December I will finalise it so that they can begin work on the construction", said Parrikar.
The meeting fixed on Monday will identify and explore solutions to resolve issues related to the land.
The Union Cabinet has approved over Rs 7,000 crore for construction of permanent campuses of six IITs across the country that will have a facility to house 1,200 students from the academic year 2020-2021.
Speaking about the same, Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral stated, "The meeting is mainly to discuss minor issues pertaining to the land. If need be we can also approach the land owners so that the land can be zeroed down on and the proposal could be taken forward."
It may be recalled that after facing stiff opposition for setting up IIT Goa in Canacona, Cabral had offered to set up the project on a vast stretch of land bordering Sanguem and Curchorem.

PANAJI: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar stated that nearly 80 per cent of the engineers who pass out find it difficult to get jobs. "I believe that engineering is one profession which gives you logical thinking. But the challenge before the country is quite different. There are so many engineering colleges and I believe that 40-50 per cent of the seats are going vacant. More than that, what is worrisome is, 70-80 per cent of the students who pass out are unemployed", he said.
