Leachate continues to pose problems at the Sonsodo waste management shed with no solution forthcoming to the issue.
If the flow of leachate from the waste management shed to the approach road to the treatment plant turned the road unmotorable, garbage trucks are facing another problem with the vehicles facing the risk of skidding inside the plant.
In an incident reported on Thursday, a garbage truck is believed to have hit a pillar inside the shed due to the slippery conditions caused by leachate.
Given the situation, the garbage truck drivers now fear for their lives and have called upon the Municipal officials to take urgent measures to clean the plant from the leachate. ‘There’s no stop to the generation of leachate inside the shed. With the JCB deployed to push back the piled waste, we have seen fresh leachate accumulating in the shed, which has made the surface slippery,” informed a driver.
He said one of the vehicles have skidded inside the shed on Thursday and hit a pillar, adding, “If not for the pillar, the vehicle would have fallen outside the shed since the portion of the wall had crumbled down last year.”
The Margao Municipal Council has till date not come out with any solution to address the leachate issue facing the Sonsodo waste management shed. Last week, the leachate issue had taken the centrestage after tons of thick black liquid flowed down on the approach road to the Sonsodo waste treatment plant, posing danger to the garbage truck drivers.
Hopes were raised that a solution to the problem is on the cards after the Margao MLA Digambar Kamat had a meeting with MMC officials, but in vain.
A proposal made by the MMC to repair the collapsed walls and to clean up the internal drains of the shed to channelise the leachate into the leachate tank has not made any progress till date.
