The Tuem Citizens’ Committee (TCC) has strongly opposed the proposed construction of a waste processing plant in Tuem village.
The Tuem Citizens’ Committee (TCC) has strongly opposed the proposed construction of a waste processing plant in Tuem village.
Site proximity
In a memorandum submitted to various authorities, the TCC stated that the proposed site is barely 200 metres from Don Bosco School and Church, which are frequented by students, teachers and devotees. It also noted that the site is close to residential areas, making it unsuitable for the project.
The committee expressed concern that dust generated by crushing, grinding and screening concrete, bricks and construction debris could reach school classrooms and playgrounds. It called for an assessment of the potential impact on students’ respiratory
health.
The TCC also warned that noise from crushers and other heavy machinery could disrupt classes, examinations and religious services.
It further pointed out that increased movement of trucks, dumpers and tippers transporting waste could endanger road users, given the village’s narrow roads used by school buses, two-wheelers and
pedestrians.
Relocation demand
The memorandum urged authorities to withhold permission for the project or immediately withdraw any permissions already granted.
The committee also proposed a joint site survey by the authorities and the Tuem Panchayat to verify the distance between the school and the proposed site and assess the potential spread of dust.
It demanded that the project be relocated to a designated industrial area away from schools, religious places and residential areas.
Copies of the memorandum have been forwarded to the North Goa District Collector, the sarpanch and secretary of the Tuem Gram Panchayat, the Directorate of Health Services, the Goa Waste Management Corporation, the Goa State Pollution Control Board and other authorities.
