Local taxi drivers have demanded that a taxi counter be started in the premises of Goa Institute of Management College at Parye in Sattari taluka. Despite repeated demands to the government to give priority to the locals, it has not been heeded. This is causing a lot of resentment among locals.
Taxi drivers from Panaji, Margao, Mapusa and other areas have been coming here illegally to do business, which has affected the business of the locals.
A demand in this regard was made to the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.A similar memorandum has also been submitted to GIM College.
The government should try to resolve the issue immediately otherwise, the problem is likely to escalate after the elections.
Giving more information in this regard, taxi driver Sandeep Naik said that on the one hand Covid is growing and on the other hand the closure of mineral mines has created less unemployment problem for many.
As a result, many people have taken car loans from banks as a means of subsistence. Many businesses have sprung up in the Goa of Management area as there are good business opportunities.
It is unfortunate that taxis have become available for the staff and students of this college from Panaji, Margao, Mapasa and other areas.
The issue was raised last week as after a complaint was lodged at the police station in this regard, an attempt was made to silence Sandeep Naik by filing a case against him. This enraged all the taxi drivers present.
Meanwhile, Valpoi police inspector Prajyot Phadte was contacted in this regard and said that the GIM has entered into an agreement with a contractor to provide taxis. According to the agreement, the contractors are providing taxis to the students and staff of the college. Even though it is accepted that the locals are being treated unfairly, such an agreement can be settled with the locals and the college management, he clarified.
