A group of concerned residents on Saturday urged Canacona Deputy Collector Pritidas Gaonkar to halt
all trade and transport from Belagavi to Canacona, following a sharp rise in COVID-19 cases in Belagavi
district.
In their memorandum, the residents requested the Canacona deputy collector to take serious note of the increasing cases of COVID-19 in Belagavi.
“There is considerable trade and transportation of essential goods between Canacona and Belagavi which, if allowed to continue in present circumstances, could prove very
dangerous for the people of Canacona.”
“It is our request to kindly stop/ban all sorts of transport and trade from Belagavi,” states the memorandum.
Trade and transportation between districts in Karnataka, including Belagavi, also enter Goa via the Polem border in Canacona.
The memorandum has been signed by eight residents, Mahadev Dessai, Dheeraj Naikgaunkar, Pralay Bhagat, Janardhan Bhandari, Vaibhav Bhat, Rajat Chari, Sarvanand Komarpant and Sandesh Telekar.
“It may also be noted that despite the best efforts to seal the borders, there are some miscreants crossing the border in vegetables and fruits vans. If the administration feels that the
borders are 100% secured and there is no illegal/illegitimate crossing of border happening, then we will
be glad to bring such cases to the notice of the administration.”
“It is also suggested that vehicles which enter with labourers should not be allowed to leave/exit without the same labourers,” adds the memorandum.
