A large crowd was witnessed at the weekly market in Valpoi town on Tuesday, as citizens gathered to purchase essential items in preparation for the upcoming monsoon season.
People thronged the marketplace to buy various household necessities. Several stalls were set up along the Fatima Convent road, selling dry chillies, fresh chillies, spices, dry fish and other seasonal items, attracting significant attention from shoppers. A crowd was noticed throughout the day and the rush increased further after 4 pm, giving the weekly market a festive atmosphere.
Tuesday is traditionally the weekly market day in Valpoi, and residents usually visit the market to purchase supplies for the entire week.
With the monsoon season approaching in the coming days, citizens have continued the long-standing tradition of stocking up on essential items for the rainy season.
Many families prefer local chillies for their strong flavour and quality.
At the Valpoi market, local chillies were being sold at Rs 800 per kilo. Vendors stated that despite the high price, there had been a strong demand for native chillies. Chillies brought from Bicholim, Sanquelim and Pernem were reportedly sold at the same rate and received a good response from customers.
Meanwhile, Kashmiri chillies were sold at Rs 500 per kilo.
Dried mackerel witnessed strong demand in today’s market, with eight pieces being sold for Rs 100. Dried prawns were priced at Rs 400 per kilo.
After working throughout the week, many labourers visit the market to buy essential goods for the coming days. Non-Goan workers especially showed greater interest in purchasing vegetables. Since vegetable prices usually fall during the evening hours, the market witnessed a particularly heavy rush later in the day.
