The Citizens Committee of Loliem (CCL) undertook a plantation drive on the eco-sensitive Bhagwati Plateau at Loliem on Sunday.
the goan I networkrCANACONArrCCL, which had opposed the proposed IIT-Goa campus on Bhagawati plateau, planted over 100 saplings on Bhagwati Plateau. Many Loliem villagers hiked up the plateau along a route which has no motorable road, carrying along with them saplings of mostly medicinal plants especially Avla, tamarind, and other wild fruit-bearing trees. rAccording to CCL president Denis Fernandes, this is the second consecutive year that people are organising the plantation drive on the hillock mostly to cover some of the parts of plateau converted barren by unscrupulous deforestation. “Since the saplings are bigger in size, people are finding it a bit cumbersome to carry it along with them, but we have plans to involve school students and plant more saplings this month itself,” said Fernandes.
