PANAJI: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has written to Governor Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju urging him to ensure that the upcoming Monsoon Session of the Goa Legislative Assembly is convened for at least 15 days to facilitate discussion on key public issues.
In his letter, Alemao said several pressing matters, including the Sarvan-Karapur issue, the impact of Section 39-A of the Town and Country Planning (TCP) Act, unemployment, deteriorating law and order, rising inflation and student-related concerns, require detailed debate and appropriate action in the House.
Expressing concern over the delay in convening the Assembly, Alemao said the government had failed to act despite the Governor's earlier direction in his April 9, 2026, letter seeking the immediate resummoning of the House.
"I write to you with deep concern regarding the Government's failure to resummon the Goa Legislative Assembly, despite Your Excellency's direction to take necessary action on my letter dated April 9, 2026, wherein I had demanded the immediate resummoning of the Assembly session," Alemao stated.
He also criticised the decision to curtail the Budget Session earlier this year. "The Thirteenth Session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly was originally scheduled from March 6 to March 27, 2026. However, it was abruptly curtailed after only seven sittings, citing the Ponda by-polls and enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct. This justification was unacceptable, as legislative sessions in other states continued unhindered under similar circumstances," he said.
According to Alemao, the premature suspension of the session denied the Opposition an opportunity to raise issues affecting the people of Goa.
He said citizens expect their elected representatives to deliberate on crucial Bills concerning land resources, the environment, demography and Goa's identity, adding that these matters remain pending due to the curtailed session.
"I am hopeful that the Governor will treat this matter with the urgency it deserves and ensure that the forthcoming Assembly session provides adequate sittings of no less than 15 days," Alemao said.
