MARGAO
Asserting that Lorna is a symbol of Goemkarponn, TCP Minister Vijai Sardesai on Thursday said that Lorna not only deserves state recognition but ought to have been bestowed with the Padma Vibhushan for her immense contribution in the field of art and music over the decades.
“The government will not be averse in bending the rules if any criteria have come in the way of bestowing the state recognition for Lorna. But, Lorna deserves much bigger recognition. She fits in the category of artists eligible for the Padma Vibhushan,” the TCP Minister said, as Ravindra Bhavan in Margao honoured Lorna on the occasion of her 74th birthday on Thursday.
Saying that the Goa Forward party will take the lead in achieving the coveted Padma Vibhushan, Sardesai appealed to all Goans to unite to get the recognition for her immense contribution to art and music. “Lorna represents Goemkarponn. I am privileged to honour an artist who has entertained generations of Goans over the decades”, he added.
In his address, RDA Minister Jayesh Salgaocar said that Lorna is a born artist, who has the capacity to pull huge crowds for her shows. “She hails from my constituency Saligao and I will take the lead in getting her due honour,” Salgaonkar said, adding that Lorna is not popular not only in Goa and India, but across the world.
Water Resources Minister, Vinod Paliencar said that Ravindra bhavan, Margao has become richer by honour Lorna. “Goa has produced many artists who have made a mark outside Goa, including the Mangueshkars and Lorna. I am a small man before Lorna, who has made a mark at the local, national and international level,” Paliencar added.
In his welcome address, Ravindra bhavan Chairman Prashant Naik said that Lorna is indeed a symbol of Goan unity as the singer is being passionately followed by all Goans, irrespective of religion and creed.
“We have to take Lorna forward,” Prashant said, as he asked the three Ministers, Vijai, Jayesh and Vinod to get state recognition for Goa’s
nightingale.
Lorna did not let down the capacity crowd at the Pai Tiatrist hall of Ravindra bhavna down as she set the stage on fire by singing the popular Konkani songs. A couple of budding singers also sang Lorna’s songs as a tribute
to the singer.
