VALPOI

Occupants of two cars had a lucky escape when they collided with each other and later caught fire at the Chorla ghat early on Thursday morning.

According to police reports, the mishap took place at a sharp turn near the Wildernest Resort on the Chorla Ghat, about 10 kms from Keri-Sattari at about 5 am.

Sources said an Audi car (MH-01-AL-9639) was traveling from Belgavi to Goa while the Chevrolet car (MH-03-AM-8782) was proceeding from Keri to Belgavi.

A tipper truck tried to overtake the Chevrolet car and both cars collided with each other. Since there were no roadside barriers for protection, both cars went off the road.

The Audi driver, Satish Vinayak Chawan of Belgaum, the Chevrolet car driver, Arun Kumar Lokre, and other passengers then escaped from both cars.

Chavan said shortly after occupants escaped from both cars, the Chevrolet car first burst into flames and the Audi car then caught fire. Within moments, both cars were destroyed in the flames.

The Valpoi police and Valpoi fire services were alerted of the incident and a fire tender went to the site to extinguish the flames.

A police staff comprising Head Constable Tulshidas Malik, Police Constables Sandeep Shelar, Laxman Parab and Srikanth Gawas later conducted the panchanama.

In a complaint lodged at the valpoi police station, cash of Rs 24,000 was reported to have been burnt along with the Audi car.

Chauhan was reportedly heading to the Panaji market, while Lokre was proceeding from Goa to Belagavi, after a four-day visit to Goa with a friend.

Incidentally, a road mishap had taken placed at the similar spot barely four days ago when a container had toppled and traffic had been held up for over six hours.
