MARGAO
The Madel area of Fatorda on Monday witnessed an uproar after the locals cried foul over the action of the Public Works Department (PWD) to pump out sewage from a choked chamber only to discharge the sewage into an adjoining storm water nallah.
Resident Milagres Fernandes, along with others, raised an objection and confronted the PWD officials, demanding to know why the government agency was violating the norms with impunity by discharging the sewage into the nallah.
“This is totally unacceptable. The concerned PWD officials who had allowed the discharge of sewage from the choked chamber into the nallah, should be immediately placed under suspension,” Milagres demanded.
Even assuming the PWD was trying to clear a choked chamber, Milagres said the government department ought to have deployed night soil tankers to collect the sewage before discharging the same at the Sewerage Treatment Plant (STP).
“The government has spent crores of rupees to build the underground sewerage network. The PWD cannot pump out sewage from a chamber and discharge the same into a storm water nallah,” he asserted.
