BICHOLIM

Maharashtra is reported to have resumed work on the water diversion project along the Colvale river at Sasoli-Maneri in Dodamarg, which could trigger a major water crisis in the talukas of Bicholim and Bardez.

Taking note of these developments, WRD Minister Vinoda Paliencar said he would inspect the site along with WRD officers and take necessary action in the matter.

“Maharashtra’s actions are illegal and we will take up the issue seriously,” said

Paliencar.

Maharashtra had begun diverting water to Vengurla by constructing a dam and had laid an 80-km pipeline to supply water to Vengurla for industrial and potable purposes about four years ago. The action had been taken without taking Goa into confidence.

Following strong objections from the Goa government, Maharashtra had halted

the work.

However, the resumption of work and planned diversion of water could cause severe water shortage to Bicholim and Bardez talukas.

Incidentally, the State government has constructed a Rs 40 crore water pumping project along the banks of the Colvale river. This project supplies water to the Amthane dam.
