PANAJI: The Bombay High Court at Goa has sought the response of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India and has asked those who petitioned it alleging inaction by the government against formalin laced fish to include the FSSAI as one of the respondents.
Hearing a bunch of petitions filed by various persons against the government, the High Court also took on record the affidavit filed by the Director of Food and Drugs Administration which listed out the powers inherent in the FSSAI Act and the steps they have taken to keep a check on formalin in fish.
“In view of the issues raised in these three petitions, response from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India would be necessary. We also direct the Registry to issue notice to the Authority, returnable on 18 September 2018 in all the PIL Writ Petitions. The Registry will send a scanned copy of the notices to the Court in Delhi with a request to serve the Authority before the next date,” the court ruled.
Three public interest petitions have been filed before the Bombay High Court at Goa accusing the government of failing to act and protecting those traders who lace their fish with formalin in bid to lengthen its shelf life and make it look fresh even days after it is caught.
