In a shocking incident, a 35-year-old man from Calangute has been accused of sexually assaulting an 85-year-old woman from Nuvem in a shop.

The Maina-Curtorim police have swung into action and have registered an FIR against the accused person. The police have alleged that the accused had criminally trespassed into the premises and sexually assaulted, abused and outraged the modesty of the 85-year-old woman.

In this connection, the police have registered the accused under Section 332(b), 64(1), 74 and 76 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

The Maina-Curtorim said the police are on the lookout for the accused person.

Briefing the media, women’s right activist Auda Viegas said that the 85-year-old woman was at her shop when the accused befriended her and sexually assaulted her by pulling down the shutters of the establishment.

She said the incident occurred on July 7 late evening.

The women’s right activist has urged the police to investigate into the antecedents of the accused person, whether he was involved in any molestation case at Mapusa.

Condemning the sexual assault on the 85-year-old woman, Auda said that the incident only goes to show that women in Goa are not safe.

“There’s no safety of women in Goa. We get complaints of women being stalked, stopped, touched by men at public places. Where’s the security for women. The women cannot fight goons. This has to stop,” she added.
