SANGUEM
A man from Bhati-Sanguem lost his life in a freak mishap when his motorcycle rammed into a bison which was crossing the village road on Sunday night.
According to reports, the incident took place at about 9.30 pm when Mahadev Laxman Naik was returning home from Sanguem on a motorcycle.
As he reached a sharp turn at Valshem-Bhati, Naik failed to see a bison crossing the road and rammed into the animal, seriously injuring himself in the mishap.
On hearing about the incident, some locals rushed to the site and summoned a 108 ambulance. Naik was shifted to the Sanguem PHC, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Naik is survived by his wife and three schoolchildren.
Locals have appealed to the State government to pay compensation to the family, as Naik was the sole breadwinner in the family.
Meanwhile, former Bhati sarpanch Chandrakant Gaonkar and a group of locals have come down strongly on authorities, especially the forest department, for failing to prevent wild animals from straying into inhabited areas of Bhati.
When contacted, Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar said he would request the forest department to immediately offer compensation to the next of kin.
