A man originally from Rajasthan was taken into police custody after allegedly vandalising the Shree Fonyeshwar Rashtroli Devasthan at Prabhu-waddo, Calangute, on Wednesday morning and allegedly threatening to shoot security guards and workers who tried to intervene.
The man was later found to be mentally unstable and admitted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour (IPHB) at Bambolim for treatment.
Calangute police sources informed that the man entered the temple premises on Wednesday morning through the roof. He allegedly removed tiles covering the sanctum sanctorum and hurled them onto the road, damaging the temple structure.
He also allegedly damaged some equipment in the premises, scattered construction materials and threw around trophies stored in the premises.
Security guards and workers employed at an adjoining building under construction attempted to stop him. However, the man allegedly threatened to shoot them dead.
Locals informed the police who intervened and took the man into custody.
After he was found to be mentally unstable, he was admitted to IPHB, Bambolim, for medical care.
Police subsequently detained him but no firearm was found in his possession.
