The Mandrem gram sabha on Sunday demanded for a public hearing on a hotel project in Mandrem village.
Raising their voice against the hotel project in the gram sabha, the villagers asked the panchayat to stop the construction work of the hotel project by issuing an notice. They said the panchayat should convene a special gram sabha and ask the hotel company officials to attend it.

In the gram sabha, Adv Amit Sawant claimed that the hotel project falls in the CRZ and the hotel owner has started the construction work without obtaining any permissions. "Will the panchayat initiate action against this hotel," he questioned.
Replying to the query, Mandrem Sarpanch Santosh Barde said the earlier panchayat had given permission to the hotel and the owners have not taken permission to construct road. Adv Sawant further said the hotel company had promised to built eco-friendly protection wall, but they built the protection wall using concrete. "The panchayat should issue notice in this regard in the same way panchayat issues notices to the residents' houses," he added.
Adv Prasad Shahapurkar said in 2009, the hotel owner had attended a special gram sabha and had assured to give 350 jobs to locals in the hotel. "Now, the owner has changed his plans and has decided to make villas. The promises made by him are false and the locals are cheated by the company," he alleged.
Deputy Sarpanch Dennis Britto, Panchas Mahadev Harmalkar, Pradeep Hadfadkar, Raghoba Gawade, Jajvi Sawant, Priya Konadkar, Ashweta Mandrekar, Ambrose Fernandes, Serephina Fernandes and Subhash Arolkar were present for the meet.
