The Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) passed a resolution to construct residential quarters for MMC workers at Dattawadi-Mapusa under the Union Government’s Dr Ambedkar Cleaning Workers Housing Scheme.

At its council meeting, the MMC also decided to hold Town Vending Committee elections on March 26, with MMC’s Accounts Officer Shivram Vaze appointed as election officer.

It may be recalled that on February 23, Union Government’s Cleaning Workers Division’s National Commissioner Dilip Hathibeb paid a surprise visit at the MMC office and inspected residential quarters of MMC workers. Hathibeb later directed the MMC to arrange quality homes for workers under the Dr Ambedkar Cleaning Workers Housing Scheme.

Placing the issue at the meeting, MMC Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar said MMC would be the first council in the State to arrange housing facilities for its workers.

“MMC had earlier decided to build a four-storeyed residential quarters for MMC workers on 3,000 sq mtrs of land owned by MMC at Dattawadi. Now this project will be undertaken through funds from the union government scheme,” informed Kavlekar.

After discussing the matter, the resolution was passed by the council.

MMC appointed its accounting officer Shivram Vaze as election officer for the Town Vending Committee’s election. The committee election will held on March 26 at 11 am in the MMC hall.

Administrative officer Bhanudas Naik, who was earlier appointed as election officer, has gone on long leave and Vaze was appointed as the new election officer.

Utilisation of Rs 1.39 crore, the second instalment of 14th Finance Commission, to hotmix roads in colonies and MMC jurisdiction was also decided in the meeting.

MMC also gave its approval to the proposal of Mayur Hotel to build a traffic island near Mapusa Urban Bank under its CSR activities.
