The North Goa Congress District President Vijay Bhike on Saturday said the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) has hardly done any work in the last five years and failed to live up to the expectations of the people of Mapusa.
He also said the Congress would promote a panel of like-minded persons in the forthcoming civic elections in Mapusa.
“For the last five years, the Mapusa councillors have only passed resolutions but failed to take them to the logical end. The bus-stand project has remained stuck for years. There is no effective management for garbage collection. Finding a parking place is a herculean task in town. The performance of the council has been a total disaster,” Bhike said.
The North Goa Congress District chief along with general secretary Bolanath Ghadi and Antonio Alvares was addressing a news conference in Mapusa.
Speaking further, Bhike said on the Cunchelin ground issue the MMC was forced to revoke the NOC to the Comunidade due to public pressure.
He said the outgoing chairperson and councillors were trying to misguide the people as the civic elections were due.
He further alleged that every councillor in the outgoing council was involved in corruption.
“One councillor who was in the market committee was involved in a scam in the market and was later removed from the committee. Another councillor has built two shops near the NH-66 at Carrasvaddo,” he alleged.
He said Congress will float a panel and may also tie-up with the MGP for the civic elections in Mapusa.
Bhike said although Tourism Minister Babu Ajgaonkar has withdrawn permission to hold the Sunburn festival, the Congress found it hard to believe.
“We are strongly against organising of the Sunburn and will never allow it to be held in the State during the ongoing pandemic,” he said.
The North Goa Congress District General Secretary Bolanath Ghadi informed that Congress will hold a ‘tractor rally’ from Bicholim to Mapusa on Sunday.
“Congress wants to make the farmers aware that the Krishi act passed by the BJP-led government is bad for them. This issue is of poor people. And therefore everyone should participate in the rally,” Ghadi said.
The rally will kick off at around 9.30 am in Bicholim and after winding through the main streets will culminate at Bodgeshwar temple, Mapusa.
Ghadi said GPCC President Girish Chodankar, Opposition leader, Digambar Kamat and North and South Goa district presidents will take part in the rally.
