The Mapusa Additional Sessions Court has granted bail to Ajay Gupta, the prime accused in the fatal Birch nightclub fire case.
Gupta, who is listed as Accused No 1 in the chargesheet filed by Anjuna Police, is a co-owner of the Birch by Romeo Lane nightclub where the tragedy occurred.
The court had earlier reserved its order after hearing arguments on his bail application. The incident dates back to December 6, when a massive fire engulfed the popular nightclub, reducing the structure to ashes.
The blaze claimed 25 lives and left six others injured, making it one of the deadliest fire tragedies in Goa in recent years. According to the police chargesheet, lapses in safety compliance, overcrowding, and alleged negligence on the part of the management are key aspects under investigation. Authorities have pointed to possible violations of fire safety norms and licensing conditions.
While granting bail, the court has considered the stage of the investigation and the filing of the chargesheet. The case continues to be under trial, with further proceedings expected in the coming weeks.
