The Mapusa Nav-Varsha Swagat Samiti will be celebrating the traditional sarvajanik ‘Gudi Padwa’ (Hindu New Year) in a grand way at Mapusa taxi-stand on April 2.
The celebration will commence with a procession of people from different parts of Mapusa which after winding its way through the main streets will culminate at the Maruti Temple at around 5.30 am.
The procession consisting of dhol pathak, dindi pathak, mahilas carrying pancharati, saffron flags and mashals will start at around 5 am from different places such as Khorlim, Ansabhat, Vithalvadi, Canca, Dattawadi, Gaunsavaddo, Angod, Shettyavaddo and Ganeshpuri and converge at the Maruti Temple at around 5.30 am.
The gathering will later participate in a joint procession and congregate at the Mapusa taxi-stand.
A sarvajanik “Gudi” will be hoisted by noted director and actor of film, 'Uri-The Surgical Strike', Yogesh Soman followed by his discourse on the topic, “Bhartiya Itihasachi Soneri Pane”.
“This is the 19th celebration of Gudi Padwa in Mapusa. This celebration in Mapusa has a historic significance. Gudi Padwa was celebrated individually by people in their homes but the sarvajanik Gudi Padwa was started in Mapusa 18 years ago,” said Anil Samant, coordinator of the event while addressing a news conference in Mapusa.
He said students, youth and women will participate in the event in a big way.
According to the organizers, the programme is expected to end at around 7.30 am.
Later, in the evening a musical programme ‘Swar Vardan’ sponsored by Directorate of Information and Publicity will be held at 6.30 pm by Vishnu Shirodkar and group.
Vaibhav Raul is the president of the utsav committee while Kaustubh Raut is the secretary.
