Shops in Mapusa market continued to remain shut and the streets remained deserted on the second day of the lockdown.
A few grocery shops and a couple of super markets remained open at the periphery of the town but reported truncated footfalls.
The fish and vegetable markets were open but did not witness any crowd.
Almost all pharmacies and petrol pumps were open but none witnessed the usual rush in the establishments.
“There are 15 deaths in Bardez today while the number of active cases is shooting up every day. We need to extend the lockdown,” said Tushar Tople, a former councillor of Mapusa.
The number of active cases in Bardez has shot up to 6,042 with Candolim Primary Health Centre (PHC) reporting the highest cases at 1,623 followed by Porvorim PHC (1,347) and Mapusa UHC (1,289).
The district administration has already declared 10 areas in Mapusa as micro containment zones while panchayats in Calangute and Porvorim constituencies have announced containment zones and imposed stricter lockdown in their jurisdictions.
