The week-long famous Bodgeshwar Zatra in Mapusa from January 1, 2018 will be plastic-free, as temple and civic authorities have initiated steps to curb plastic waste.
This was announced at a news conference addressed by Devastan Committee President Anand Bhaidkar and Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Rohan Kavlekar on Friday. Goa Solid Waste Management Corporation MD Sanjith Rodrigues, Saligao Waste Treatment Plant Manager Richard Dias, Prerna Pawaskar, Mapusa Councillor Sudhir Kandolkar and Devastan committee members were also present at the news conference.
"Vendors selling coconuts, bananas and prasad will be provided jute fibre carry bags and cloth bags at 1 rupee each, while separate bags will be provided to collect garbage by the MMC. We will place dustbins in various places around the temple," informed Kavlekar. He informed that the MMC will depute two engineers to monitor the premises to ensure that the festival is plastic-free.
"Two teams of 25 workers will be engaged to collect garbage," Kavlekar added.
The devastan committee thanked Rodrigues for taking the initiative to promote a garbage-free Bodgeshwar zatra.
Speaking to reporters, Rodrigues said there would be a ban on the use of plastic bags and those found using plastic bags would be penalised.
