MARGAO
Margao Municipal Administration were caught napping as a citizen exposed the security at the cash counter on the ground floor of the building.
Though the counter receives cash amounting to lakhs of rupees every day, the counter has not been secured by the municipal administration till date. Inquiries have revealed that any one can just jump into the room housing the cash counter from the building passage and decamp with the cash in the drawer. For, the windows have not been secured by iron grills nor the entire place has been covered under CCTV
surveillance.
Margao municipal councillor Tito Cardozo said the civic body just cannot allow such a security lapse around the room housing the cash counter when revenue worth lakhs of rupees comes into the municipal coffers every day.
“The Chief Officer and his team should inspect the security around the place. Failure to secure the room might cost the civic body,” Tito said.
Former Margao municipal chairperson Savio Coutinho pointed out that there’s a dire need to secure the cash counter room since any outside element can just enter inside and run away with cash.
“Not only should the windows be secured with iron grills, but the entire place should be brought under the CCTV cameras as well,” Coutinho added.
When The Goan contacted MMC Chief Y B Tawde to shed light on the poor security around the cash counter, he conceded that the room needs to be secured from the security point of view. In fact, Tawde claimed that the cash counter receives cash amounting to Rs 15 lakh almost every day. “I will call a meeting of the officials concerned, including the municipal engineer, to find out how best to secure the cash counter room,” he added.
