Yet another dead dog found its way to the Sonsodo waste treatment plant on Thursday, suggesting that the Margao Municipal Council is still struggling to send segregated waste to the plant.
This is the second dead dog in as many dogs to be sent to the waste treatment plant by the MMC when the solid waste management rules mandate the civic bodies to dispose of the carcasses of animals by burying in the ground.
The incident only once again brought to the fore that mixed waste from the city continues to find its way to the Sonsodo plant, indicating that the civic body is struggling to send segregated waste to the plant. Incidentally, while Fomento workers are on the job to segregate the mixed waste received from the civic body, plans by the Municipality to engaged a gang of 25 workers at Sonsodo to segregate the mixed waste at the tipping point has not taken off till date.
MMC Chief Officer Sidhivinayak Naik had recently taken interviews of labourers for their deployment at the tipping point of the waste treatment plant to ensure that the plant receives only segregated waste. While MMC sources informed that households across the city have been handing over segregated waste to a great extent, the black spots and the transfer stations are still a matter of concern for the civic body, with large amount of mixed waste finding its way to these spots almost everyday.

MARGAO: Mixed waste piled up at the black spots and transfer stations across the city as the Margao Civic body did not lift the waste to the Sonsodo site for the last three days.
With mixed waste not accepted at the Sonsodo waste treatment plant and citizens crying foul over open waste dumping at Sonsodo, mounds of waste could be seen at the black spots and the transfer stations in the last three days, giving a bad look for the city.
MMC officials, however, pointed out that the waste piled up at the black spots and at the transfer stations will be cleared no sooner the 25 daily wage workers join duty in a day or two. “Once these workers join duty, they will be deployed at the tipping point at the waste treatment plant to segregate the mixed waste before the segregated waste is handed over to the plant,” a senior MMC official said.
He pointed out that once the labourers join duty, the MMC will start clearing the black spots of the tonnes of waste lying unattended since the last three days. “We did not lift away the waste dumped at the black spots and the transfer stations since the plant does not accept mixed waste,” he added.
There are around 75 black spots and transfer stations dotting across the city, where mixed waste from the city and outside finds its way everyday.
While the MMC had in the past resolved to introduce garbage sentinels to keep miscreants from dumping waste at the black spots, the scheme is yet to take off for reasons best known to the City Fathers and babus.
