After implementing the Modified Assured Career Progression (MACP) scheme for the first time in over two decades, the Margao Municipal Council has announced another boost for municipal employees — a hike in medical and other allowances.

The council has also extended medical allowance benefits to temporary status daily wage workers from the current financial year, benefiting around 180 workers.

The announcements were made at a joint media briefing by leaders of the Goa Municipal Employees Association, Keshav Prabhu and Anil Shirodkar, along with MMC Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, after signing a new settlement on Wednesday.

Under the new settlement, each municipal employee will receive a medical allowance of Rs 11,000 per month, an increase of Rs 3,000. Other allowances, including uniform and washing allowances, have also been raised.

Prabhu and Shirodkar welcomed the agreement, stating that employees and workers will benefit greatly. They thanked Chairperson Damu Shirodkar, Chief Officer Madhu Narvekar and other civic officials, adding that the three-year settlement addresses employees’ medical needs.

This is the second increase in medical allowance in three years. The last hike was in 2023, when it was raised to Rs 9,000.

Importantly, temporary status workers have now been brought under the scheme, with each of the 180 workers entitled to Rs 3,000 per month as medical allowance.

Damu Shirodkar said the council had also recently implemented the MACP scheme, under which Rs 2.77 crore was paid to employees. “The employees had not received the benefit of the MACP scheme for the past 25 years,” he said.
