MARGAO
As part of the plan to tackle the dry waste problem head on and ensure that no dry waste goes to Sonsodo after March 31, the Margao Municipal Council on Tuesday launched another baling machine at the old fish market area.
This is the second baling machine that has been set up at the Old fish market in the last two months, with Margao Municipal chairperson Pooja Naik saying the civic body has drawn up plans to set up two more baling machines in the old market area by February-end as part of the decentralization plan.
The second baling machine at the old fish market, behind the MMC building is expected to stop the flow of dry waste to Sonsodo, and which may facilitate the three baling machines at Sonsodo to clear the huge backlog of dry waste lying at the site.
“The Margao municipality has chalked out a plan of action to decentralize waste management. As part of the plan, we have installed the second baling machine at the Old fish market. Two more are proposed at the MMC property at Old market”, she said.
MMC Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar informed that the municipality has now put a plan in pace wherein no dry waste will be transported to Sonsodo after March 31.
“These two baling machines at the old fish market and the two machines proposed at old market will help to tackle dry waste in the city,” Panchwadkar said, adding that the three baling machines installed at Sonsodo will only tackle the mound of dry waste at the site.
MMC chairperson Pooja said the MMC has recently take a decision to set up bio-methane plants in the city as part of the decentralization plan.
“Garbage heading to Sonsodo will decline to a great extent once the proposed bio-methane plants take shape in the next one month,” she said, while exuding confidence that the civic body will be able to manage solid waste management in a systematic and effective manner.
Waste contractor to continue
collection for two more months
MARGAO: A day after door-to-door waste collection was affected in the 11 wards of Fatorda for want of a contractor, the Margao Municipal Council has succeeded in persuading the incumbent contractor to help the Civic body in the job at least for the next two months.
After the waste from the households in the Fatorda remained uncollected on Monday, garbage workers fanned to the residential houses and housing societies in the 11 Municipal wards on Tuesday after chairperson Pooja Naik and Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar persuaded the incumbent contractor to continue the work for some time before the civic body floats a tender to rope in a new contractor.
The Chief Officer is believed to have explained that he would immediately set in motion the process to appoint a new door-to-door waste collection contractor, hoping that the election code of conduct which is expected to come into force from February 15 in view of the Zilla Panchayat polls, does not come in the way of completing the codal formalities.
