Margao police file sexual abuse case, ‘victim’ withdraws claim

Woman declines to undergo medical test

MARGAO
The Margao Police on Monday registered an FIR against unknown persons in connection with the alleged sexual abuse of a caretaker in the city on Sunday.

However, in a new twist, the victim woman reportedly declined to undergo a medical examination at the South Goa district hospital on Monday evening, claiming that she had not been sexually abused. This led the team, which included police and women’s rights activist Auda Viegas, to return without completing the procedure.

Treading cautiously, both the police and the women’s rights NGO have now decided to produce the victim before the Magistrate on Tuesday to record her statement in the case.

Superintendent of Police, South, Tikam Singh, informed that the Margao police have registered the case of rape against unknown persons based on a complaint filed by a female lawyer. He said the victim had initially claimed she was sexually abused before refusing to undergo a medical examination.

“The police have adopted a cautious approach, given that the case is sensitive and involves a woman. Hence, we decided to register the FIR as a precautionary measure based on the complaint lodged by a city-based female lawyer. The victim had also initially claimed that she had been sexually abused. However, it is another matter that the woman has declined to undergo a medical examination at the South Goa district hospital,” he added.

Sources said the 25-year-old woman from Karnataka had come to Goa on Saturday morning to take up the job of a caretaker for an elderly family living in Margao. In the FIR, the Margao police stated that the unknown accused took the victim to an unknown room in Margao and raped her after giving her an intoxicating drink.

On Sunday evening, the woman was spotted by the female lawyer at Comba after she claimed to have been sexually assaulted. She was later taken to the South Goa district hospital for a medical examination and subsequently brought back to the Margao police station in the early hours of Monday.
