Speaking to media persons on Wednesday, Manna Bepari, president of Qureshi Meat Traders Association, said there was no illegal activity being carried out with regards to the slaughtering of bulls and buffaloes at the state-run Goa Meat Complex in Usgao.
“When bulls or buffaloes are brought to the premises of Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL), the doctor from the animal husbandry department checks each and every bull and buffalo with regard to its fitness and also inspects the fitness certificate issued by the veterinary doctor from the neighbouring state where the bulls or buffaloes are purchased,” he said.
He added that the animal husbandry doctor then conducts the anti-mortem in the presence of CCTV cameras at GMCL to ascertain whether the bulls or buffaloes are fit for slaughtering, and after being satisfied, they are then sent to slaughter. After the slaughtering is done, a post mortem is conducted by the GMCL
veterinary doctor.
“After the necessary procedures are conducted, the meat is kept in the chilling room at the complex, and the next day at about 3 am, the same is dispatched in the vehicles belonging to GMCL to the shops selling beef in North and South Goa,” he said.
Bepari said that 70 traders registered with the association had the appropriate licences including those required from the municipality, Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) and health department. He added that many of the owners of shops were selling beef since the Portuguese regime.
