Meeting of the South Goa Zilla Panchayat, chaired by newly elected chairperson Anita Thorat.
MARGAO
The South Goa Zilla Panchayat on Wednesday resolved to request the government to build the proposed Zilla Panchayat Bhavan on the land acquired for the education hub at Davorlim, on the outskirts of Margao.
The meeting further resolved to streamline the administration to cater to growing requirements, even as the Zilla Panchayat received an administrative grant amounting to Rs 4.5 crore on Wednesday.
The Zilla Panchayat members supported the government’s decision to carve out the third district, saying it will benefit the people staying in the hinterland talukas. The district panchayat body also complimented the BJP government at the Centre and in Goa for having passed the Bill on political reservations for the Scheduled Tribes in the State Assembly.
At the meeting chaired by newly elected ZP Chairperson, Anita Thorat, Davorlim Zilla Panchayat member Paresh Naik pointed out that the proposed Zilla Panchayat Bhavan can be set up at Davorlim on the 1.21 lakh square metres of government land acquired to set up the education hub.
Paresh tabled a resolution at the meeting to request the government to allocate land admeasuring 5,000 square metres for the ZP Bhavan. He also proposed a community hall at the ZP Bhavan.
Raia ZP member Dominick drew the attention of the chair to the fact that a similar proposal had been mooted by him to acquire land at Raia to build the proposed ZP Bhavan, but the proposal fizzled out for lack of interest from the members. He said the landlord was even ready to provide land admeasuring 2,000 square metres for the Zilla Panchayat to build the ZP Bhavan, but in vain.
Chairperson Thorat later told the media that the ZP will forward the resolution adopted by the ZP to set up the ZP Bhavan on the government land acquired for the education hub. She said the ZP will also explore the possibility of acquiring the Raia land for the purpose.
Saying the Zilla Panchayat will renovate the office to meet administrative requirements, Thorat said stress would also be laid on streamlining the administration.
The ZP also decided to approach the government to accord temporary status to the Zilla Panchayat contract employees on the lines of the municipal workers.
