According to them, these competitions drag the youths into several bad addictions.

Addressing a news conference at Bandora on Tuesday, the panchas of Marcaim, Agapur-Durbhat, Kundaim, Wadi-Talaulim, Bandora and Kavlem demanded the ban. ZP member Chitra Phadate was also present.

Kavlem sarpanch Rajesh Kavalekar said they don’t have any problem regarding making effigies of narkasur. “Our objection is only towards organising competitions. Youth engage themselves to make it one month prior to Diwali. During this period, they don’t remain in control of the parents and they get addicted to bad things. We want to stop this,” Kavalekar said.

According to Kavalekar, making the effigies of Narkasur for competitions consumes a long time and thus youth get a chance to remain out of their houses.

“We have to resurrect our culture, which the youths are neglecting or forgetting. Let us celebrate Diwali how it should be,” Kavalekar emphasised.

In order to spread the awareness and to celebrate Diwali in a traditional way, MG Party along with these panchayats will be organising a programme on Diwali day at Bhausaheb Bandodkar ground at Bandora at 6.30 pm. They will worship Lord Krishna and will light 2,000 ‘panteo’ (lamps). The programme will be followed by a musical programme by Prachala Amonkar, a vocalist.
