Speaking during a press interaction, Glenn Kalavampara the Secretary of the GMOEA said that the recent events especially in Sonshi only highlighted the need for transparent systems and better methods to analyse the system.
“Lower levels of pollution are in everybody’s interest. If we know that the pollution levels are rising we can take steps to mitigate them,” Kalavampara told the press.
“There are a set of procedures that have to be followed as laid down by the Central Pollution Control Board, these procedures need to be followed while measuring the pollution levels. A transparency in the methods of recording and in exchange of data between the mining firms and the recording agencies is in everybody’s interests,” Kalavampara said. He said that the lack of transparency in the methods currently practised could mean that the readings of air pollution levels could be higher than what is permitted and hence unfair to the companies. He insisted that, given the experience of the last four years, and the result of the mining ban, the mining fims wanted to ensure that everything is functioning smoothly and not drawing the ire of environmentalists or courts.
