Mishap involving 4 vehicles at Pernem, one injured; highway blocked for 3 hrs

A truck driver was injured while passengers in a bus and other motorists had a lucky escape, when four vehicles, including a police jeep, were badly damaged in a road mishap on the NH17 at Malpem-Pernem on Friday morning.

The incident led to the disruption of traffic along the highway for nearly 
three hours.   
According to Pernem police, the mishap occurred at about 10 am, when a truck, a bus, police jeep and a container were proceeding in the same direction. The truck was carrying pipes, while the bus with some passengers was proceeding towards Mapusa.   
Police said the bus dashed the truck from the rear. The driver of the police jeep, which was trailing the bus, applied the brakes and stopped.   
Police added that the driver of the container, which was behind the police jeep, also applied brakes, due to which he lost control over the vehicle and the container turned on its side.   
Police said the impact of the accident was such that the pipes from the truck entered the bus through the windscreen. Luckily, no passengers in the bus sustained injuries. The policemen in the jeep also escaped unhurt, but the tyre was ruptured.   
Police added that the container driver in an attempt to save the police jeep applied brakes and turned 
on its side. 
The cabin was separated from the container and the driver was trapped in the cabin.   
Pernem fire officials rushed to the site and cut the cabin and rescued the container driver, Ramvillas Choudhari from Rajasthan. He sustained injuries and was shifted to District 
Hospital Mapusa.   
Pernem fire officials Pradeep Mandrekar, Vitthal Gaonkar, Vitthal Parab, Sahdev Chodankar, Vasudev Haldankar, Mahadev Gawas, Ketan Kamulkar and Prashant Shetgaonkar took part in the rescue operation, while the fire 
officials Prashant Dhargalkar and Sameer Korgaonkar, who were off-duty, also rushed to the site.   
Traffic along the highway was disrupted for over three hours. Pernem police, traffic police and 
locals ensured the smooth movement of traffic.   
Pernem police conducted the panchanama and is investigating the case.
