An inspection of the Sonsodo waste dumping site has been planned by the government after Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar along with Vijai, Revenue Minister Rohan Khaunte and senior officials inspected the Saligao plant on Monday before working out a solution to the Sonsodo problem.
That the new government headed by Chief Minister has inspected the Saligao plant and the waste dump indicates that the dispensation may not go in for the GSUDA appointed consultant to resolve the imbroglio. For, the Saligao waste dump, was being cleared by the GSIDC, which has been roped in now for the inspection of the Sonsodo dump yard on Tuesday.
“After inspecting the Saligao plant and the waste dump, I am optimistic that a solution can be worked out for the Sonsodo dump. I have discussed the Sonsodo issue with Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, who has assured his full support to get rid of the waste mound,” he said.
Replying to a question, Vijai said since there’re only two and half months to go for the ensuing monsoons, the government will float the tender at the earliest so that work commences at Sonsodo at least before the rains. “The contractor may need some space to set up the giant screen to sort out the waste. Either the space will be created at the existing dumping site or we will look for a vacant plot adjacent the dump yard,” Vijai said.
That the government has roped in GSIDC officials for an inspection of the Sonsodo dump yard indicates that it may not favour the GSUDA appointed consultant from Madhya Pradesh to rid Sonsodo of the waste.
GSUDA, which was appointed as a nodal agency by the High Powered Coordination Committee on Sonsodo during the tenure of Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar, had floated a tender for the bio-remediation of the existing waste at Sonsodo. Though the tender was opened, the work order could not be handed over to the contractor since the contentious question of a land fill site to accommodate the waste after segregation remained unresolved till date.
