MAPUSA
As Mapusa continues to be hit by water supply, Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza visited the Assonora water treatment plant and confronted officials over the inadequate amount of water being supplied to Mapusa.
Speaking to reporters, D’Souza said he has also reported the matter to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and has been assured that the problem would be resolved within two days.
“I had visited the Assonora water treatment plant to identify the reason for the water shortage in Mapusa. The plant produces about 85 MLD, but Mapusa receives only 7-8 MLD of water, which is half of its required capacity.”
“PWD officials were unable to explain the reason for the poor supply to Mapusa. I have also directed them to find a solution on leakages in the pipelines," said D’Souza.
“I have spoken to Chief Minister Pramod Sawant and requested him to look into the matter. He has promised to solve the issue within two days," the Mapusa MLA added.
Several PWD engineers were present during D’Souza’s visit to the Assonora water treatment plant.
Since the past 10-15 days, Bardez has been hit by severe water shortage, with several places like Mapusa, Verla-Canca, Camurlim, Siolim, Assagao and Porvorim among the worst affected.
Only one water pump from the Assonora plant with capacity of 50 MLD is working. Besides, the plant also receives water from Amthane and Padose. In all, the Assonora water treatment plant purifies and distributes around 85-92 MLD of water.
However, only 7-9 MLD water is supplied to Mapusa, which has a requirement of 16-17 MLD water.
Incidentally, since the last 10 days, the PWD quarters in Mapusa have also not received water supply. Sources said the pipeline to these quarters is blocked but officials have failed to identify the exact spot of the blockage.
Sources also added that the State government had decided to build a water treatment plant at Guirim with water supplied through the Tilari dam, as a substitute for the Assonora plant. But there has not been much progress on this project.
