Pernem MLA Pravin Arlekar inspected the Women and Child Development office at the government administrative complex in Pernem, after a portion of the ceiling collapsed and injured the head clerk on Monday.
Arlekar was accompanied by Deputy Collector Shivprasad Naik and other officials as he took stock of the incident and interacted with the office staff.
Later speaking to reporters, Arlekar said informed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant about the incident.
“I plan to get the building repaired immediately or else, we need to construct a new government complex,” said Arlekar.
Naik informed the MLA that the poor conduction of the building had been conveyed to the PWD, but the matter was not taken seriously. Naik informed Arlekar of an urgent need to take remedial measures to prevent such an incident from repeating in future.
According to sources, letters had been written to authorities since 2022 highlighting the dilapidated condition of the building.
Following the collapse of the portion of the ceiling at the Women and Child Development office on the second floor of the government administrative complex, fears are now being raised over the safety and structural stability of other offices in the complex and other government buildings in Pernem.
A number of government offices are located in the government complex and they include the offices of the mamledar, deputy collector, block development officer, PWD, women and child welfare development office, etc.
Several people are employed in these offices, while a large number of people visit these offices on weekdays.
