Calangute MLA Michael Lobo had urged the local panchayat not to proceed with its proposal to hike house tax, citing the slowdown in tourism and rising inflation. Lobo said many panchayats, including Candolim, Parra and Assagao, had chosen not to raise taxes and Calangute should follow suit.

“There is already a lot of burden on the common man. Inflation is high and there are fewer tourists in the coastal belt. Many locals who had given their houses on rent have taken them back as there is no business,” he said.

Arguing that Calangute panchayat was financially well placed, Lobo said it could easily do without additional revenue from a tax hike. “It’s okay if weaker panchayats resort to it. But Calangute is doing very well, even in tax collection. There is no need to burden people further,” he added, noting widespread opposition to the move.
