Before the market could start in the morning, the MMC workers cleared the garbage on a war-footing with the help of a compactor. By 10 am, everything was cleared.
Motorcycle pilot, Rajesh Kumar, said the authorities get up from their slumber only when issues are highlighted in the media. “If the elected representatives have a clear vision and will to carry out good work, then nothing can stop the port town from being the most clean and attractive city,” said Kumar.
A senior citizen, Ralph Rodrigues from Vaddem, said the authorities should not wait till the media highlights issues. “It is because of the media there are checks and balances, otherwise the authorities are least bothered.”
When contacted, MMC CO Deepali Naik blamed the stall owners for creating mess and MMC workers for not clearing the garbage. “We accept petty amount from these stalls and flower vendors just crop up at the last minute. After business hours they leave the garbage behind.” “MMC market supervisors and inspectors are also responsible for creating this mess, as they failed to act,” she added.
