VASCO: The Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairperson Deepak Naik has blamed the flyover work for flooding in parts of Baina.
MMC Chairperson Deepak Naik conducted an inspection with locals on Tuesday morning, following several complains from locals in Baina that rainwater had entered their houses in the last two days.
During inspection, it was noticed that several drains and nullahs which existed since the Portuguese era were blocked with mud due to the construction work of the flyover project at Baina.
“This has resulted in blocked drains and that is why Baina had witnessed floods, with rainwater entering houses,” said Naik.
During inspection, it was also found that the railway gate at Baina had blocked access for rainwater, causing further flooding of water.
Naik later instructed the contractor to immediately clear the drains and also convened an emergency meeting with railway officials in MMC on Wednesday, to direct them to clear the blockage.
“The main nullah existing since Portuguese era has been blocked with mud by Gammon India and a railway gate has blocked access of rainwater, causing flooding.”
“We are not against development but Gammon India should maintain the old drains as Vasco is the most well planned city and if these people maintain the existing drains and don't block them, then we will never have any issues.”
“We have instructed Gammon to clear the drains immediately. We have also convened a meeting to discuss and resolve this issue,” said Naik.
