Perhaps for the first time in recent times, the corridors of the heritage Margao Municipal building has been cleared of the waste dump, thanks to an initiative by Margao Civic chief Damu Shirodkar.

In fact, one can move around the corridors, which were all blocked till recently with scrap and old files. While cupboards stacked with old files still dot along the long Municipal corridor, the scrap has been either carted away to Sonsodo or disposed of by the Municipal workers.

With the government now expected to float a tender for the renovation and beautification of the 120-odd year old heritage Municipal building, the Margao civic chief said the issue of stacking of all old files will be finally resolved. “The ground floor of the municipal building will have a mezzanine floor, which will be used exclusively to stack the old files. The proposed system will get rid of the cupboards, which are presently found in the municipal corridor”, he said.

Damu said the MMC has undertaken the task of clearing the junk from the municipal corridors as per the instructions issued by the Chief Minister Pramod Sawant recently. “The Chief Minister has told the MMC to make an inventory of the scrap and junk stored in the Municipal corridor and dispose the same at Sonsodo”, he said.
